Pitru smaran (calm check) Sample chart
Calm check
Information
The Sun is in Kumbha, in the 2nd house. The 9th house is Kanya; its lord Mercury is in Makara, in the 1st house. Tradition links these with the father, elders and ancestors. This is information only; no verdict is drawn from it.
This year's Pitru paksha: 26 Sep 2026 – 10 Oct 2026
What tradition says
Tradition links the 9th house and the Sun in a chart with the father, elders and ancestors. This tab shows where those two stand and gives information on the living custom of remembering ancestors (śrāddha in Pitṛ-pakṣa). It is not a dosha check: there is no 'dosha found' or 'not found' answer.
ePandit shows only the facts:
- the Sun's sign and house;
- the sign of the 9th house, its lord, and that lord's sign and house.
No score, verdict or warning is drawn from them. With an unknown birth time the lagna and houses cannot be fixed; the 9th is then counted from the Moon sign (Chandra lagna), and the page says so.
Alongside, the panchang gives this year's Pitṛ-pakṣa dates (the dark fortnight of Bhādrapada, also called Mahālaya).
We found no chart condition called 'Pitru dosha' in the texts in our library (BPHS, Phaladīpikā, Sārāvalī, Bṛhat Jātaka, Jātaka Pārijāta, Horā Sāra, Praśna Mārga, Dharmasindhu, Nirṇayasindhu). What the texts do say is that the Sun signifies the father and the 9th house is the father's house (BPHS; Phaladīpikā gives 'Pitṛ' as one name of the 9th).
BPHS chapter 83 lists some combinations of 'curses from a previous birth' in the context of progeny, naming the father, mother, brother and others. That is a different subject, it does not use the term 'Pitru dosha' either, and ePandit does not apply it to anyone's chart.
The living custom of remembering ancestors is śrāddha. Dharmasindhu and Nirṇayasindhu describe the śrāddha of the dark fortnight of Bhādrapada (Pitṛ-pakṣa, Mahālaya) in detail, and Dharmasindhu says that if the whole fortnight is not possible, it may be done on a single day.
