Introduction

Makara is the tenth sign of the zodiac, covering 270°–300° of the sidereal zodiac. Makara's symbol is the makara, a sea-creature, and tradition links it with hard work, discipline and a steady climb. Its lord is Saturn, its element is earth, its nature is movable, and it is an even (female) sign. It holds Uttara Ashadha 2,3,4, Shravana 1,2,3,4 and Dhanishtha 1,2 (nakshatra padas).

In North India, when someone says "my rashi is Makara", they mean the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in at birth. The first letter of a name, daily rashifal and kundli matching are all read from this Moon sign.

Note that sidereal Makara does not match the Western Capricorn dates; the FAQ below explains why.

Nature

As an earth sign of movable nature ruled by Saturn, Makara is seen by tradition as practical, responsible and given to long-term planning. People with the Moon here are thought to trust hard work, take responsibility seriously, and prefer slow but sure progress.

Still, this is only a tendency, not a verdict on any person. Two people with the same Moon sign can be very different, because the lagna, nakshatra, houses and dasha all shape the picture.

Strengths and things to keep in mind

Strengths: tradition associates this sign with discipline, patience, carrying responsibility, and planning for the long run.

Things to keep in mind: A focus on work and duty can sometimes push rest and joy aside, and expressing feelings can feel awkward. Making time for light moments with loved ones, and saying what one feels, helps.

Both sides belong to the same temperament; neither is a flaw.

Work and interests

Tradition associates Makara with themes such as work that involves structure, responsibility and building something big over time: management and administration, government or institutional work, engineering and construction, finance, and fields where responsibility grows with experience. This does not fix one profession; for work, the 10th house, the dasha and the whole chart are read.

Relationships

Tradition sees Makara as a sign that connects through trust and responsibility. Keeping commitments is thought to matter more than display here, and loved ones' futures are kept in mind. Putting affection into words too helps a partner feel close. The real picture of relationships comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the whole chart, not from the sign alone.

When Makara is the lagna

The lagna and the Moon sign are different things. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and place, while the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days.

When Makara is the lagna, Saturn becomes the lagna lord, and its placement matters for the whole chart. Tradition links a Makara lagna with a disciplined, practical outlook that plans for the long term. Your Moon sign and lagna can be the same or different; each says its own thing.

Name syllables

In the avakahada chakra tradition, Makara has nine name syllables: भो, जा, जी, खी, खू, खे, खो, गा, गी. Each belongs to one nakshatra pada:

  • Uttara Ashadha: pada 2: भो, pada 3: जा, pada 4: जी
  • Shravana: pada 1: खी, pada 2: खू, pada 3: खे, pada 4: खो
  • Dhanishtha: pada 1: गा, pada 2: गी

At a naming, the syllable is chosen from the nakshatra pada of the Moon at birth. Use the name-letter calculator to find yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Makara my Moon sign or my lagna? How do I tell?

The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at birth; the lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon. Both come from the date, exact time and place of birth. A free kundli lists them separately.

Why do Makara dates differ from Western Capricorn?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Today the two are about 24° apart (the ayanamsa). So the Sun is in sidereal Makara roughly from 14 January to 12 February, not on the Western Capricorn dates (22 December to 19 January).

What are the name syllables for Makara?

भो, जा, जी, खी, खू, खे, खो, गा, गी. Which one is yours depends on the nakshatra pada of your birth Moon.

Why is Makara's varna listed as Vaishya?

The avakahada chakra lists Makara as Vaishya; varna here is an old astrological category, not caste. In ashtakoota kundli matching, varna and vashya are two small factors, and this grouping exists for them. Makara's vashya is first half Chatushpada, second half Jalachara. It has nothing to do with a person's family or community.

Which planets are exalted, debilitated or in moolatrikona in Makara, and what does it mean?

Following BPHS, in Makara Mars is exalted (deepest at 28°) and Jupiter is debilitated (deepest at 5°). These are technical names for planetary dignity, and none of them decides good or bad on its own; the house a planet sits in, its company and the running dasha are all read together.
