The 1st house: the Lagna, or Tanu bhava

The 1st house, the Lagna or Tanu bhava, is the starting point of the chart. Tradition links it to temperament, the way a person meets the world and the general direction of life; the other eleven houses are counted from it.

What the 1st house shows

The sign rising in the east at the moment of birth is the Lagna, and that sign becomes the 1st house. Tradition calls it tanu, the house of the body, but its meaning goes beyond the physical. Jyotish associates the 1st house with:

  • temperament and the first impression a person gives
  • outlook on life, self-confidence and the way new things are begun
  • identity, name and how one presents oneself

No single house describes a whole person; the full chart is read together.

Its place in tradition: group, karaka, dig bala

The 1st house is both a kendra and a trikona. Tradition calls the kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) the pillars of the chart and the trikonas (1, 5, 9) the houses of dharma; the Lagna belongs to both, which is why it is treated as the foundation. Among the four aims of life it is a dharma house.

Its natural karaka is the Sun, which tradition links with the self and confidence. In the chart of the kalapurusha the first sign is Mesha, ruled by Mars. In dig bala, Jupiter and Mercury gain full directional strength in the Lagna, the east (Raman, Graha and Bhava Balas). That is one part of shadbala; on its own it decides nothing.

Whole-sign house and bhava chalit

ePandit shows the 1st house in two ways. In whole-sign houses the 1st sign counted from the Lagna is the whole 1st house. In the bhava chalit the house boundaries are set from the exact degree of the ascendant, so a planet near the edge of a sign can appear in the neighbouring house.

The midpoint of the 1st bhava is the exact degree of the ascendant. Suppose the Lagna is at Mithuna 25° and the Moon at Karka 3°: in whole-sign houses the Moon is in the 2nd, but in the chalit it can fall within the 1st.

These are two views of the same sky, not a mistake. ePandit uses whole-sign houses (D1) as the base; when the two differ, tradition reads the themes of both houses together.

The lagna lord and planets here, read calmly

The ruler of the 1st house is the lagna lord: Mars for a Mesha lagna, Venus for Vrishabha, and so on. Tradition holds that the house the lagna lord occupies draws attention in life. With the lagna lord in the 10th, work tends to be read as a focus; in the 4th, home and family.

Planets in the 1st house are said to add their colour to temperament: the Moon warmth and feeling, Mercury curiosity and conversation, Saturn patience and seriousness. An empty 1st house is not a lack; the lagna lord and the aspects on the Lagna are read instead. Sign, nakshatra, aspects and the running dasha together make the picture.

The navamsa lagna and the vargas

The sign rising in the navamsa (D9) is the navamsa lagna. Tradition reads the birth lagna and the navamsa lagna together: the birth chart shows the outer picture and the navamsa its depth. The navamsa lagna can change roughly every 13–14 minutes, so an accurate birth time matters a great deal here.

The 1st house of every varga is the base from which that chart is counted. ePandit shows all the divisional charts.

Ashtakavarga: the numbers for this house

Ashtakavarga adds the bindu tables of seven planets into the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV); in every chart the twelve signs hold exactly 337 points, about 28 per sign on average. The 1st house's number is the SAV of the sign that falls in your 1st house (the sign the Lagna falls in).

ePandit shows these figures unreduced. They are a count, not a verdict, and we do not call them good or bad. You can see the number in the Ashtakavarga tab of your free kundli.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Lagna different from the Moon sign?

The Lagna is the sign rising in the east at birth; it changes about every two hours. The Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied at birth; in North India names and rashifal follow it. They are different things, each with its own use.

Does the 1st house show health?

Tradition links it with the body, but ePandit makes no health predictions from a chart. For health, a doctor is the first support.

What if my birth time is uncertain?

If the Lagna falls mid-sign, a few minutes make no difference; near the edge of a sign they can. A hospital record or a time written down by the family is the most reliable.

How do I find my lagna lord?

Make a free kundli: the Lagna sign, its lord and the house the lord sits in all appear in the summary.
