The 2nd house: Dhana bhava

The 2nd house, Dhana bhava, is linked by tradition to savings, family, speech and food. Tradition sees it as the house of what one keeps, not of any amount.

What the 2nd house shows

The second sign from the Lagna is the 2nd house. Its traditional name is Dhana bhava, the house of wealth, but tradition sees more than money here. Jyotish associates it with:

  • savings, accumulated resources and what a person holds on to
  • family, especially the household one grows up in
  • speech: the way one talks, truthfulness and the effect of words
  • food habits and the traditions around meals
  • early learning and the values absorbed at home

Tradition holds that if the 1st house says 'who I am', the 2nd says 'what I have and what I value'. This is a tendency, not a fixed fact; financial decisions belong to your own judgement and qualified advice.

Its place in tradition: group, karaka, dig bala

The 2nd house is a panaphara, one of the houses that follow a kendra (2, 5, 8, 11). Tradition sees these as the places where what the kendras begin is gathered and settled. Among the four aims of life it is an artha house, concerned with means and resources.

Its natural karaka is Jupiter, which tradition links with growth and knowledge. In the kalapurusha chart the second sign is Vrishabha, ruled by Venus, which is said to colour the house with a love of keeping and of beauty. Full dig bala arises only in the four kendras, so no planet gains it here.

Whole-sign house and bhava chalit

ePandit shows the 2nd house in two ways. In whole-sign houses the 2nd sign counted from the Lagna is the whole 2nd house. In the bhava chalit the house boundaries are set from the exact degree of the ascendant, so a planet near the edge of a sign can appear in the neighbouring house.

Suppose the Lagna is at Simha 20° and Mercury at Tula 1°: in whole-sign houses Mercury is in the 3rd, but in the chalit it can fall within the 2nd. Its colour is then read in speech and family matters as well.

These are two views of the same sky, not a mistake. ePandit uses whole-sign houses (D1) as the base; when the two differ, tradition reads the themes of both houses together.

The 2nd lord and planets here, read calmly

The ruler of the 2nd house is called the dhanesha. Tradition holds that the house it occupies shows where resources tend to come from: with the 2nd lord in the 10th, through work; in the 4th, through home or land. It points to a direction, not an amount.

Planets in the 2nd are said to colour speech and the family atmosphere: Mercury quickness in conversation, Venus pleasant words and taste, Mars direct and frank speech. An empty 2nd house is not a lack. No single planet decides anything without its sign, aspects and dasha.

The 2nd house in the navamsa and the hora (D2)

The Shodashavarga chapter of BPHS assigns the hora (D2) to wealth and resources. In the hora each sign is split in two, and every planet falls in either the Sun's or the Moon's hora. Tradition reads the 2nd house and its lord in D1 first and uses the hora as a cross-check.

The 2nd lord's place in the navamsa (D9) is read too, since tradition treats the navamsa as the chart of each planet's depth. The hora is a small division, so an accurate birth time matters here as well.

Ashtakavarga: the numbers for this house

Ashtakavarga adds the bindu tables of seven planets into the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV); in every chart the twelve signs hold exactly 337 points, about 28 per sign on average. The 2nd house's number is the SAV of the sign that falls in your 2nd house; with a Karka lagna, for example, that is Simha.

ePandit shows these figures unreduced. They are a count, not a verdict, and we do not call them good or bad. You can see the number in the Ashtakavarga tab of your free kundli.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 2nd house tell how much money I will have?

No. Tradition links it with resources and the habit of keeping, not with any amount. Make money decisions with your own planning and qualified advice.

Why is the 2nd called the house of family?

Tradition links it with kutumba, the family one grows up in. The 4th is tied to home and mother; the 2nd to the wider household and its values.

What does speech have to do with this house?

Tradition connects the 2nd house with the mouth and speech: the manner of talking, the choice of words and truthfulness. Planets here are said to colour that manner.

Where can I see my hora (D2) chart?

In ePandit's free kundli, open the charts tab and pick D2 in the D-selector.
