What the 3rd house shows
The third sign from the Lagna is the 3rd house. Sahaja means 'born together', so tradition calls it the house of siblings; parakrama means effort made on one's own strength. Jyotish associates the 3rd house with:
- courage, initiative and moving ahead through one's own effort
- younger siblings and the bond with them
- communication, writing, messages and fields that involve getting a message across
- short journeys, the neighbourhood and one's immediate circle
- hobbies and skills such as music, sport or craft
Tradition holds that this house shows how a person turns wishes into effort. It is a tendency, not a fixed fact; the full chart is read together.
Its place in tradition: group, karaka, dig bala
The 3rd house is an apoklima (3, 6, 9, 12), the house after a panaphara, and also an upachaya. Upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11) means 'growing': tradition holds that the matters of these houses unfold with age and experience. Among the four aims of life it is a kama house, the house of desires.
Its natural karaka is Mars, which tradition links with courage and energy. In the kalapurusha chart the third sign is Mithuna, ruled by Mercury, which is why speech and writing are read here too. It is not a kendra, so no planet gains full dig bala here.
Whole-sign house and bhava chalit
ePandit shows the 3rd house in two ways. In whole-sign houses the 3rd sign counted from the Lagna is the whole 3rd house. In the bhava chalit the house boundaries are set from the exact degree of the ascendant, so a planet near the edge of a sign can appear in the neighbouring house.
Suppose the Lagna is at Mesha 22° and Mars at Karka 2°: in whole-sign houses Mars is in the 4th, but in the chalit it can fall within the 3rd. Mars is then read in matters of courage and initiative as well.
These are two views of the same sky, not a mistake. ePandit uses whole-sign houses (D1) as the base; when the two differ, tradition reads the themes of both houses together.
The 3rd lord and planets here, read calmly
The ruler of the 3rd house is the tritiyesha. Tradition holds that the house it occupies shows where effort tends to go: with the 3rd lord in the 10th, initiative at work; in the 5th, creative hobbies.
Because this is an upachaya house, tradition is comfortable with planets such as Mars or Saturn here: Mars brings drive and nerve, Saturn slow, steady and lasting effort. Mercury is said to add a leaning toward writing and speaking. An empty 3rd house is not a lack; the 3rd lord and the aspects are read instead.
The 3rd house in the navamsa and the drekkana (D3)
The Shodashavarga chapter of BPHS assigns the drekkana (D3) to siblings. In D3 each sign is split into three parts of 10°. Tradition reads the 3rd house and its lord in D1 first and uses D3 to confirm.
The 3rd lord and Mars are also read in the navamsa (D9). No varga gives a verdict alone; they are layers that support one another.
Ashtakavarga: the numbers for this house
Ashtakavarga adds the bindu tables of seven planets into the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV); in every chart the twelve signs hold exactly 337 points, about 28 per sign on average. The 3rd house's number is the SAV of the sign that falls in your 3rd house; with a Tula lagna, for example, that is Dhanu.
ePandit shows these figures unreduced. They are a count, not a verdict, and we do not call them good or bad. You can see the number in the Ashtakavarga tab of your free kundli.
