What the 11th house shows
The eleventh sign from the Lagna is the 11th house. Its traditional name is Labha bhava, the house of what comes in. Jyotish associates it with:
- income, gains and the fruit of effort
- friends, acquaintances and one's network
- elder siblings
- wishes and hopes coming true
- groups, organisations and work done together
Tradition holds that if the 10th is action, the 11th is its fruit. It shows a leaning, not an amount; money decisions belong to your own planning and qualified advice. The full chart is read together.
Its place in tradition: group, karaka, dig bala
The 11th house is a panaphara (2, 5, 8, 11) and an upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11). Tradition holds that the matters of the upachaya houses grow with effort and time, and calls the 11th the main house of gain. Among the four aims of life it is a kama house, the house of desires.
Its natural karaka is Jupiter, which tradition links with expansion and growth. The eleventh sign of the kalapurusha is Kumbha, ruled by Saturn: the colour of groups, society and working together. It is not a kendra, so no planet gains full dig bala here.
Whole-sign house and bhava chalit
ePandit shows the 11th house in two ways. In whole-sign houses the 11th sign counted from the Lagna is the whole 11th house. In the bhava chalit the house boundaries are set from the exact degree of the ascendant, so a planet near the edge of a sign can appear in the neighbouring house.
Suppose the Lagna is at Mithuna 4° and Jupiter at Meena 26°: in whole-sign houses Jupiter is in the 10th, but in the chalit it can fall within the 11th. Tradition then reads Jupiter in matters of gain and friendship too.
These are two views of the same sky, not a mistake. ePandit uses whole-sign houses (D1) as the base; when the two differ, tradition reads the themes of both houses together.
The 11th lord and planets here, read calmly
The ruler of the 11th is the labhesha. Tradition holds that income and support connect with the house it occupies: with the 11th lord in the 10th, through work; in the 5th, through learning or creative work; in the 7th, through partnership.
Tradition is generally at ease with any planet in the 11th, since it is the house of gain and growth: Jupiter good friends and advisers, Mercury trade and networks, Saturn slow but lasting growth, Rahu links with large groups and new fields. An empty 11th house is not a lack; the 11th lord and the aspects are read instead.
The 11th house in the navamsa and other vargas
The shodashavarga scheme assigns no single varga to the 11th house, so tradition reads it mainly in the birth chart (D1) and the navamsa (D9), where the 11th lord's sign shows its depth.
For questions of income many astrologers also look at the hora (D2, resources) and the dashamsha (D10, work), since gains are usually tied to these two. They are layers, not separate verdicts.
Ashtakavarga: the numbers for this house
Ashtakavarga adds the bindu tables of seven planets into the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV); in every chart the twelve signs hold exactly 337 points, about 28 per sign on average. The 11th house's number is the SAV of the sign that falls in your 11th house; with a Vrishabha lagna, for example, that is Meena.
ePandit shows these figures unreduced. They are a count, not a verdict, and we do not call them good or bad. You can see the number in the Ashtakavarga tab of your free kundli.
