The 10th house: Karma bhava

The 10th house, Karma bhava, is linked by tradition to work, career, public standing and responsibility. It is the highest point of the chart, where what a person does becomes visible to the world.

What the 10th house shows

The tenth sign from the Lagna is the 10th house. It is the top of the chart, the highest point of the sky at birth, so tradition calls it the house of action and standing. Jyotish associates it with:

  • work and the direction of a career
  • public standing, honour and reputation
  • responsibility, authority and leadership
  • karma: what a person does and is known for
  • in some traditions, the father too (he is mostly read from the 9th)

Tradition holds that the 10th shows the nature of one's work, not a single profession: fields that involve giving people direction, say, or fields that need precision and order. Career choices come from interest, training and opportunity; the full chart is read together.

Its place in tradition: group, karaka, dig bala

The 10th house is a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) and also an upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11). Tradition sees the 10th as the most active kendra, and as an upachaya its matters grow with age and experience. Among the four aims of life it is an artha house.

It has four natural karakas: the Sun (authority), Mercury (skill and trade), Jupiter (knowledge and honour) and Saturn (effort and service). The tenth sign of the kalapurusha is Makara, ruled by Saturn: a slow climb up a mountain. In dig bala the Sun and Mars gain full directional strength in the 10th, the south (Raman, Graha and Bhava Balas); it is one calculation among many.

Whole-sign house and bhava chalit

ePandit shows the 10th house in two ways. In whole-sign houses the 10th sign counted from the Lagna is the whole 10th house. In the bhava chalit the house boundaries are set from the exact degree of the ascendant, so a planet near the edge of a sign can appear in the neighbouring house.

Suppose the Lagna is at Karka 28° and the Sun at Vrishabha 5°: in whole-sign houses the Sun is in the 11th, but in the chalit it can fall within the 10th. Tradition then reads the Sun in matters of work and standing too.

These are two views of the same sky, not a mistake. ePandit uses whole-sign houses (D1) as the base; when the two differ, tradition reads the themes of both houses together.

The 10th lord and planets here, read calmly

The ruler of the 10th is the dashamesha or karmesha. Tradition holds that work connects with the house it occupies: with the 10th lord in the 3rd, writing, communication or self-started work; in the 7th, partnership or work with the public; in the 12th, work tied to distant lands or institutions.

Planets in the 10th are said to colour the way of working: the Sun leadership, Mercury accounts and communication, Venus a link with art and beauty, Saturn long and patient effort. An empty 10th house is not a lack; the 10th lord and the aspects on the house are read instead.

The 10th house in the navamsa and the dashamsha (D10)

The Shodashavarga chapter of BPHS assigns the dashamsha (D10) to work, position and great undertakings. In D10 each sign is split into ten parts of 3°. Tradition reads the 10th house and its lord in D1 first and confirms with the lagna, the 10th house and its lord in D10.

The 10th lord in the navamsa (D9) is read too. D10 can change within a few minutes of birth time, so an accurate time matters here.

Ashtakavarga: the numbers for this house

Ashtakavarga adds the bindu tables of seven planets into the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV); in every chart the twelve signs hold exactly 337 points, about 28 per sign on average. The 10th house's number is the SAV of the sign that falls in your 10th house; with a Kanya lagna, for example, that is Mithuna.

ePandit shows these figures unreduced. They are a count, not a verdict, and we do not call them good or bad. You can see the number in the Ashtakavarga tab of your free kundli.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 10th house tell which job I should do?

No. Tradition speaks of the nature and leaning of work, not of a single profession. Choose a career by your interest, training and opportunity.

How do the 6th and 10th houses differ?

Tradition links the 6th with service and daily work, and the 10th with the direction of a career and standing. Both are read together.

Why does the dashamsha (D10) matter?

BPHS names it the varga of work and position. Tradition reads the 10th house of D1 together with D10.

My 10th house is empty. Will work be held back?

No, there is no such rule. Empty houses are common; the 10th lord, its dasha and the aspects are read instead.
