Introduction

Saturn is the slowest of the planets seen by eye: it spends about two and a half years in a sign and completes the circle in about 29.5 years. That is why it is called "Shanaishchara", the slow mover. In the Puranas Shani is the son of the Sun.

Saturn owns two signs, Makara and Kumbha. Along with the usual 7th, it also aspects the 3rd and 10th houses from itself.

The site has a separate, calm page on Saturn's transit over the Moon sign. Here we look at Saturn as a planet.

What it signifies

Tradition holds that Saturn signifies:

  • patience, discipline and sustained effort
  • time, rules and responsibility
  • service, fairness and honesty
  • elders, working people and community

For work, tradition associates Saturn with fields that involve persistence, systems, long-range planning, service or institutions.

Tradition also holds that what Saturn gives, it gives through effort and slowly, and it lasts. These are tendencies, not settled facts; Saturn's house, sign and dasha give the meaning together.

Exalted, debilitated, own sign: in plain words

Saturn's own signs are Makara and Kumbha. Exaltation is at Tula 20° and debilitation at Mesha 20°, the same degree in the opposite sign. The first 20 degrees of Kumbha are moolatrikona; the rest of Kumbha and all of Makara are own sign.

Saturn's natural friends are Mercury and Venus; its neutral is Jupiter; the old classification lists Mars, the Moon and the Sun as enemies. These are old labels; in shadbala they only decide how many points of positional strength a planet earns in a sign. Raman's method also adds the temporary relationship from the birth chart.

Exalted, debilitated, own sign and moolatrikona are names for a position, not a verdict on anyone's life. Debilitation by itself decides nothing; houses, aspects, dasha, the navamsa and the whole chart speak together.

Shadbala and this planet, in plain words

Shadbala is the sum of six kinds of strength: positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual. ePandit computes it by B. V. Raman's method in Graha and Bhava Balas. The unit is the virupa; 60 virupas make 1 rupa.

Raman gives each planet a traditional required minimum. For Saturn it is 300 virupas (5 rupas). We show you one simple ratio:

Ratio = Saturn's total shadbala ÷ 300

  • Above 1 means only that Saturn has more than the traditional minimum to work with in its themes.
  • Below 1 says nothing bad. It means other factors lead in that chart: another planet, the running dasha, or a house.

Saturn's naisargika (natural) bala is 8.57 virupas, the same in every chart. Directional strength is full when Saturn sits in the 7th house (west). Saturn's natural bala is the lowest of the seven, but it is a fixed share, the same in every chart, so it says nothing about any one person. Saturn's special 3rd and 10th aspects are counted separately in aspect strength.

Other software may show small differences; we follow Raman's method. Shadbala is a measure built on arithmetic; it does not decide any result on its own.

Mahadasha

In Vimshottari, Saturn's mahadasha lasts 19 years. Tradition holds that responsibility, persistence, stability at work, long-range plans and service come forward in this time. Tradition sees it as a time for building something lasting through effort.

The real colour depends on where Saturn sits in your chart, which houses it rules and which antardasha is running. Every mahadasha holds nine antardashas.

Faith

Tradition links Saturday with Saturn. If you wish, you can chant Saturn's name-mantra 11 or 108 times in the morning, with a calm mind:

ॐ शनैश्चराय नमः (Om Śanaiścarāya Namaḥ) (planet name-mantra: tradition)

On a Saturday, you may give a little black sesame or a meal to someone in need. (folk belief, optional)

This is a matter of faith, not a condition. No costly remedy is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Should I be afraid of Saturn?

No. Tradition sees Saturn as the planet of fairness and effort. It gives slowly, and what it gives lasts. No single planet decides a life.

What do Saturn's 3rd and 10th aspects mean?

Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself. Saturn also aspects the 3rd and 10th. This is a rule of aspects, not a warning.

My Saturn ratio is below 1. Should I worry?

No. Below 1 only means other factors lead in your chart: another planet, the running dasha or a house. Shadbala does not decide any result on its own.

How long is Saturn's mahadasha?

19 years in Vimshottari. If your birth nakshatra is Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada, your first dasha in life is Saturn's.

If Saturn is exalted, will everything go well?

Exaltation is the name of a position and one factor among many. Houses, aspects, the dasha and the whole chart speak together.
