Introduction

Tula is the seventh sign of the zodiac, covering 180°–210° of the sidereal zodiac. Tula's symbol is the balance scale, and tradition links it with balance, fairness and harmony. Its lord is Venus, its element is air, its nature is movable, and it is an odd (male) sign. It holds Chitra 3,4, Swati 1,2,3,4 and Vishakha 1,2,3 (nakshatra padas).

In North India, when someone says "my rashi is Tula", they mean the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in at birth. The first letter of a name, daily rashifal and kundli matching are all read from this Moon sign.

Note that sidereal Tula does not match the Western Libra dates; the FAQ below explains why.

Nature

As an air sign of movable nature ruled by Venus, Tula is linked by tradition with a sociable, fair-minded temperament that loves beauty. People with the Moon here are thought to like hearing both sides, to look for a middle path rather than a quarrel, and to want beauty and calm around them.

Still, this is only a tendency, not a verdict on any person. Two people with the same Moon sign can be very different, because the lagna, nakshatra, houses and dasha all shape the picture.

Strengths and things to keep in mind

Strengths: tradition associates this sign with balanced thinking, courtesy, a gift for bringing people together, and a feel for art and beauty.

Things to keep in mind: The wish to keep everyone happy can sometimes delay decisions. Giving one's own preference equal weight, and deciding in good time, helps.

Both sides belong to the same temperament; neither is a flaw.

Work and interests

Tradition associates Tula with themes such as work that involves harmony, mediation, beauty or partnership: law and mediation, counselling, design, fashion and the arts, public relations, and businesses run in partnership. This does not fix one profession; for work, the 10th house, the dasha and the whole chart are read.

Relationships

Tradition sees Tula as a sign that values partnership highly. People with this Moon sign are thought to want equality, courtesy and kind words in a relationship and to try to keep their partner happy. Voicing disagreement gently too keeps the bond honest and balanced. The real picture of relationships comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the whole chart, not from the sign alone.

When Tula is the lagna

The lagna and the Moon sign are different things. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and place, while the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days.

When Tula is the lagna, Venus becomes the lagna lord, and its placement matters for the whole chart. Tradition links a Tula lagna with a balanced, sociable outlook that values relationships. Your Moon sign and lagna can be the same or different; each says its own thing.

Name syllables

In the avakahada chakra tradition, Tula has nine name syllables: रा, री, रू, रे, रो, ता, ती, तू, ते. Each belongs to one nakshatra pada:

  • Chitra: pada 3: रा, pada 4: री
  • Swati: pada 1: रू, pada 2: रे, pada 3: रो, pada 4: ता
  • Vishakha: pada 1: ती, pada 2: तू, pada 3: ते

At a naming, the syllable is chosen from the nakshatra pada of the Moon at birth. Use the name-letter calculator to find yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tula my Moon sign or my lagna? How do I tell?

The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at birth; the lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon. Both come from the date, exact time and place of birth. A free kundli lists them separately.

Why do Tula dates differ from Western Libra?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Today the two are about 24° apart (the ayanamsa). So the Sun is in sidereal Tula roughly from 17 October to 15 November, not on the Western Libra dates (23 September to 22 October).

What are the name syllables for Tula?

रा, री, रू, रे, रो, ता, ती, तू, ते. Which one is yours depends on the nakshatra pada of your birth Moon.

Why is Tula's varna listed as Shudra?

The avakahada chakra lists Tula as Shudra; varna here is an old astrological category, not caste. In ashtakoota kundli matching, varna and vashya are two small factors, and this grouping exists for them. Tula's vashya is Nara (human). It has nothing to do with a person's family or community.

Which planets are exalted, debilitated or in moolatrikona in Tula, and what does it mean?

Following BPHS, in Tula Saturn is exalted (deepest at 20°), the Sun is debilitated (deepest at 10°) and Venus is in moolatrikona (0–15°). These are technical names for planetary dignity, and none of them decides good or bad on its own; the house a planet sits in, its company and the running dasha are all read together.
