Introduction
Vrishchika is the eighth sign of the zodiac, covering 210°–240° of the sidereal zodiac. Vrishchika's symbol is the scorpion, and tradition links it with depth, determination and inner resolve. Its lord is Mars, its element is water, its nature is fixed, and it is an even (female) sign. It holds Vishakha 4, Anuradha 1,2,3,4 and Jyeshtha 1,2,3,4 (nakshatra padas).
In North India, when someone says "my rashi is Vrishchika", they mean the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in at birth. The first letter of a name, daily rashifal and kundli matching are all read from this Moon sign.
Note that sidereal Vrishchika does not match the Western Scorpio dates; the FAQ below explains why.
Nature
As a water sign of fixed nature ruled by Mars, Vrishchika is seen by tradition as deeply feeling, determined and inward-looking. People with the Moon here are thought to like getting to the bottom of things, to keep their feelings for a trusted few, and to put full effort into whatever they set out to do.
Still, this is only a tendency, not a verdict on any person. Two people with the same Moon sign can be very different, because the lagna, nakshatra, houses and dasha all shape the picture.
Strengths and things to keep in mind
Strengths: tradition associates this sign with determination, deep insight, being trusted with confidences, and staying the course through hard times.
Things to keep in mind: Keeping feelings inside can sometimes weigh on the mind, and old hurts can be hard to let go. Talking to trusted people, and forgiving, lightens the load.
Both sides belong to the same temperament; neither is a flaw.
Work and interests
Tradition associates Vrishchika with themes such as work that calls for deep enquiry, persistence or discretion: research and investigation, science, psychology and counselling, finance and insurance, and fields where hidden things must be understood. This does not fix one profession; for work, the 10th house, the dasha and the whole chart are read.
Relationships
Tradition sees Vrishchika as a sign that connects deeply and wholeheartedly. Honesty and loyalty are thought to come first here, and once trust is given it is kept fully. Choosing open conversation over suspicion makes the bond feel safer. The real picture of relationships comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the whole chart, not from the sign alone.
When Vrishchika is the lagna
The lagna and the Moon sign are different things. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and place, while the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days.
When Vrishchika is the lagna, Mars becomes the lagna lord, and its placement matters for the whole chart. Tradition links a Vrishchika lagna with a deep-thinking, determined outlook that stays with its aims. Your Moon sign and lagna can be the same or different; each says its own thing.
Name syllables
In the avakahada chakra tradition, Vrishchika has nine name syllables: तो, ना, नी, नू, ने, नो, या, यी, यू. Each belongs to one nakshatra pada:
- Vishakha: pada 4: तो
- Anuradha: pada 1: ना, pada 2: नी, pada 3: नू, pada 4: ने
- Jyeshtha: pada 1: नो, pada 2: या, pada 3: यी, pada 4: यू
At a naming, the syllable is chosen from the nakshatra pada of the Moon at birth. Use the name-letter calculator to find yours.
