What is the birth chart (D1)?

The birth chart, also called the rashi chart or D1, is a map of the sky at the moment of birth: twelve houses, twelve signs and nine grahas. Every other calculation, from the dasha to the navamsa, ashtakavarga and shadbala, is built on it.

Introduction

The birth chart is a picture of the moment you were born. The sign rising on the eastern horizon at that moment is the lagna (ascendant), and the first house begins there. The other eleven houses follow in the order of the signs. Then each of the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) is written into the house of the sign it occupied.

It is called D1 because each sign is taken whole, as one division. When a sign is split into 2, 3, 9 or 60 parts, you get the divisional charts D2, D3, D9, D60. They all rest on the D1, which is why a reading always starts here.

What the chart contains

  • Lagna: the first house. Tradition associates it with a person's own temperament and make-up.
  • Twelve houses: each is linked by tradition to an area of life, such as the 2nd with family and speech, the 4th with home and mother, the 7th with partnership and the 10th with work.
  • Twelve signs: Mesha to Meena, each with a ruling planet.
  • Nine grahas: each sits in a sign and a house. Rahu and Ketu are the Moon's nodes, counted with the planets by tradition.
  • Moon sign and nakshatra: the sign holding the Moon is your Moon sign (chandra rashi). North India uses it for names and the rashifal. The lagna and the Moon sign are often different, and both are correct for what they describe.

In the North Indian diamond chart, the top-centre box is always the first house; the number written in it is the lagna's sign.

How ePandit casts the chart

  • Sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, so our Mesha does not match the Western Aries dates.
  • Apparent planetary positions, and the mean node for Rahu and Ketu.
  • Whole-sign houses: the lagna's whole sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. We also print a separate bhava chalit (Śrīpati method) so that a planet near a house boundary is visible.
  • Dignities such as exalted, debilitated or own sign are shown as data in a table. They are names for a position; none of them decides anything alone.

Why the birth time matters so much

The lagna changes roughly every two hours, sometimes faster, sometimes slower. A half-hour error can therefore move the lagna, and with it the house of every planet. The Moon stays about two and a quarter days in a sign, so the Moon sign is far less sensitive to time.

ePandit shows how many minutes earlier or later the birth would have to be for the lagna to change. If that margin is small, it is worth confirming the time with the family. If the time is unknown, we work from the Moon sign and nakshatra instead.

Reading a chart: one factor is not the whole picture

Tradition reads a chart by holding many things together: the lagna and its lord, the Moon, where the house lords sit, the running dasha, and then the divisional charts such as the navamsa. Drawing a conclusion about a whole life from one planet or one house is not how the tradition works.

That is why every table in an ePandit kundli carries its method, and why no single placement is presented as something to fear. Make your free kundli to see your lagna, Moon sign, nakshatra and dasha in one place.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the lagna chart and the Moon chart?

The lagna chart counts the first house from the rising sign; the Moon chart (chandra kundli) treats the Moon's sign as the first house and places the same planets again. Tradition looks at both; with a reliable birth time the lagna chart leads.

Why is my sign different from my Western horoscope?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and Indian astrology the sidereal one; they are now about 24° apart, so the sign often shifts back by one. Also, the Western "sign" is the Sun's sign, while ours is usually the Moon's.

Can a chart be made without the birth time?

Yes, but only partly. The planets' signs, the Moon sign (on most days) and a rough dasha are available. The lagna, houses, divisional charts and shadbala are not reliable without the time.

Should I worry if a planet is debilitated in my chart?

No. Debilitation is the name of a position, not a verdict. Tradition also looks at the sign lord, aspects, the dasha and the vargas. One position alone decides nothing.

Which charts should be read after the D1?

Tradition looks at the navamsa (D9) first, then other vargas by topic, such as the dashamsha (D10) for work. ePandit shows all sixteen shodashvarga charts, with how many minutes of birth-time change would move each varga lagna.
