What is Kemadruma yoga?

Kemadruma yoga is counted when no planet other than the Sun sits on either side of the Moon (in the 2nd and 12th houses from it). The texts also give several cancellations, and in most charts at least one of them applies.

Introduction

Online, Kemadruma yoga is often written about in frightening words. But the same texts that describe it also give several cancellations, so many that in most charts the yoga does not fully apply.

On this page we look at it calmly: the rule, the cancellations, and how ePandit shows it.

The rule

A planet in the 2nd from the Moon gives Sunapha, in the 12th Anapha, and in both Durudhura. The Sun is not counted for these, nor are Rahu and Ketu; only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

When none of these three forms, that is, no planet on either side of the Moon, the result is called Kemadruma (Phaladeepika 6.5, Saravali 13.2, Brihat Jataka ch. 13).

The BPHS rule (37.11-13) is stricter: it counts Kemadruma only when no planet is with the Moon either, and no planet is in a kendra from the lagna.

Cancellations: when it does not apply

The texts give these cancellations. ePandit checks each one separately:

  1. A planet in a kendra from the lagna: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the lagna. By BPHS the yoga then does not form at all. Brihat Jataka and Phaladeepika report this view too.
  2. A planet with the Moon: any planet in the Moon's own sign (BPHS, Phaladeepika 6.5).
  3. A planet in a kendra from the Moon: a planet in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the Moon (Phaladeepika 6.5, Raman).
  4. An aspect on the Moon: Saravali (13.2) counts Kemadruma only when no planet aspects the Moon.

The commentary in Jataka Parijata also gives Garga's view that any of these five planets in a kendra mitigates or nullifies Kemadruma.

Raman shows an example chart in which both sides of the Moon are empty, yet he writes that Kemadruma is clearly cancelled because the kendras are occupied.

Why so many cancellations matter

Think about it: five planets (Mars to Saturn) are spread across twelve signs. It is very common for at least one of them to sit in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon, to sit with the Moon, or to aspect it. So a full Kemadruma, with no cancellation at all, appears in relatively few charts.

Even where it forms without a cancellation, it is one factor among many in the whole chart. The old texts associate it with phases of feeling alone or short of means. Tradition also takes the Moon as the significator of the mind, and holds that staying close to one's people, a regular routine, and meditation or prayer give the mind support in such phases. There is nothing here to fear.

How ePandit shows it

Your chart shows one of three statuses for Kemadruma:

Status Meaning
Not formed At least one planet is on one side of the Moon (Sunapha, Anapha or Durudhura).
Formed but cancelled Both sides are empty, but a cancellation applies; which one is named.
Formed Both sides are empty and no cancellation was found.

The cancellations are always shown next to the yoga, with no alarm colours or words. Without a birth time the lagna-based cancellation cannot be checked; the page says so plainly.

Frequently asked questions

My chart has Kemadruma. What should I do?

First see whether a cancellation applies; ePandit shows this alongside. Most charts have one. Even if none applies, it is only one factor among many in the whole chart.

Is a puja necessary for it?

No. ePandit does not sell any remedy with this yoga. Tradition holds that simple Moon-related practices, such as a Monday prayer or time with one's mother and family, support the mind; that is your choice.

What if the Sun is next to the Moon?

The Sun is not counted for these yogas. So if only the Sun is in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon, Sunapha or Anapha does not form.
