Introduction
Dhanu is the ninth sign of the zodiac, covering 240°–270° of the sidereal zodiac. Dhanu's symbol is the archer, and tradition links it with aims, learning and wide-open thinking. Its lord is Jupiter, its element is fire, its nature is dual, and it is an odd (male) sign. It holds Mula 1,2,3,4, Purva Ashadha 1,2,3,4 and Uttara Ashadha 1 (nakshatra padas).
In North India, when someone says "my rashi is Dhanu", they mean the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in at birth. The first letter of a name, daily rashifal and kundli matching are all read from this Moon sign.
Note that sidereal Dhanu does not match the Western Sagittarius dates; the FAQ below explains why.
Nature
As a fire sign of dual nature ruled by Jupiter, Dhanu is seen by tradition as hopeful, fond of learning and free-spirited. People with the Moon here are thought to enjoy big questions, like travel and new places, and to be drawn to faith, philosophy or high ideals.
Still, this is only a tendency, not a verdict on any person. Two people with the same Moon sign can be very different, because the lagna, nakshatra, houses and dasha all shape the picture.
Strengths and things to keep in mind
Strengths: tradition associates this sign with optimism, honesty, a love of learning and teaching, and lifting other people's spirits.
Things to keep in mind: Speaking the truth freely can sometimes come across as blunt, and a love of freedom can make daily routine feel dull. Care in how things are said, and finishing small tasks too, helps.
Both sides belong to the same temperament; neither is a flaw.
Work and interests
Tradition associates Dhanu with themes such as work that involves knowledge, guidance, travel or big goals: teaching and training, law, religion and philosophy, publishing, travel and tourism, and fields where people are given direction. This does not fix one profession; for work, the 10th house, the dasha and the whole chart are read.
Relationships
Tradition sees Dhanu as an open, honest way of connecting. Friendship, shared dreams and giving each other space are thought to matter here. A little gentleness with a partner's feelings, and setting aside time together, deepens the bond. The real picture of relationships comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the whole chart, not from the sign alone.
When Dhanu is the lagna
The lagna and the Moon sign are different things. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and place, while the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days.
When Dhanu is the lagna, Jupiter becomes the lagna lord, and its placement matters for the whole chart. Tradition links a Dhanu lagna with a hopeful, learning-minded outlook that sees life on a wide canvas. Your Moon sign and lagna can be the same or different; each says its own thing.
Name syllables
In the avakahada chakra tradition, Dhanu has nine name syllables: ये, यो, भा, भी, भू, धा, फा, ढा, भे. Each belongs to one nakshatra pada:
- Mula: pada 1: ये, pada 2: यो, pada 3: भा, pada 4: भी
- Purva Ashadha: pada 1: भू, pada 2: धा, pada 3: फा, pada 4: ढा
- Uttara Ashadha: pada 1: भे
At a naming, the syllable is chosen from the nakshatra pada of the Moon at birth. Use the name-letter calculator to find yours.
