Introduction

Kanya is the sixth sign of the zodiac, covering 150°–180° of the sidereal zodiac. Kanya's symbol is a maiden, and tradition links it with careful detail, service and order. Its lord is Mercury, its element is earth, its nature is dual, and it is an even (female) sign. It holds Uttara Phalguni 2,3,4, Hasta 1,2,3,4 and Chitra 1,2 (nakshatra padas).

In North India, when someone says "my rashi is Kanya", they mean the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in at birth. The first letter of a name, daily rashifal and kundli matching are all read from this Moon sign.

Note that sidereal Kanya does not match the Western Virgo dates; the FAQ below explains why.

Nature

As an earth sign of dual nature ruled by Mercury, Kanya is seen by tradition as thoughtful, orderly and helpful. People with the Moon here are thought to look at things closely, like work done neatly, and help others quietly without fuss.

Still, this is only a tendency, not a verdict on any person. Two people with the same Moon sign can be very different, because the lagna, nakshatra, houses and dasha all shape the picture.

Strengths and things to keep in mind

Strengths: tradition associates this sign with attention to detail, analytical sense, a knack for organising, and a spirit of service.

Things to keep in mind: The wish to get everything right can sometimes turn into worry or being hard on oneself. Accepting that 'good enough' is sometimes fine keeps the mind light.

Both sides belong to the same temperament; neither is a flaw.

Work and interests

Tradition associates Kanya with themes such as work that involves detail, checking, numbers or service: accounts and analysis, editing, research, technology, support and coordination roles, and fields where getting the process right matters. This does not fix one profession; for work, the 10th house, the dasha and the whole chart are read.

Relationships

Tradition sees Kanya as a sign that connects through practical care. People with this Moon sign are thought to show love less through grand words and more through small acts, such as noticing what a partner needs. Saying appreciation out loud adds warmth. The real picture of relationships comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the whole chart, not from the sign alone.

When Kanya is the lagna

The lagna and the Moon sign are different things. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and place, while the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days.

When Kanya is the lagna, Mercury becomes the lagna lord, and its placement matters for the whole chart. Tradition links a Kanya lagna with an orderly, thoughtful outlook with a spirit of service. Your Moon sign and lagna can be the same or different; each says its own thing.

Name syllables

In the avakahada chakra tradition, Kanya has nine name syllables: टो, पा, पी, पू, ष, ण, ठ, पे, पो. Each belongs to one nakshatra pada:

  • Uttara Phalguni: pada 2: टो, pada 3: पा, pada 4: पी
  • Hasta: pada 1: पू, pada 2: ष, pada 3: ण, pada 4: ठ
  • Chitra: pada 1: पे, pada 2: पो

At a naming, the syllable is chosen from the nakshatra pada of the Moon at birth. Use the name-letter calculator to find yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kanya my Moon sign or my lagna? How do I tell?

The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at birth; the lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon. Both come from the date, exact time and place of birth. A free kundli lists them separately.

Why do Kanya dates differ from Western Virgo?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Today the two are about 24° apart (the ayanamsa). So the Sun is in sidereal Kanya roughly from 17 September to 16 October, not on the Western Virgo dates (23 August to 22 September).

What are the name syllables for Kanya?

टो, पा, पी, पू, ष, ण, ठ, पे, पो. Which one is yours depends on the nakshatra pada of your birth Moon.

Why is Kanya's varna listed as Vaishya?

The avakahada chakra lists Kanya as Vaishya; varna here is an old astrological category, not caste. In ashtakoota kundli matching, varna and vashya are two small factors, and this grouping exists for them. Kanya's vashya is Nara (human). It has nothing to do with a person's family or community.

Which planets are exalted, debilitated or in moolatrikona in Kanya, and what does it mean?

Following BPHS, in Kanya Mercury is exalted (deepest at 15°) and in moolatrikona (15–20°), while Venus is debilitated (deepest at 27°). These are technical names for planetary dignity, and none of them decides good or bad on its own; the house a planet sits in, its company and the running dasha are all read together.
