Introduction

Kumbha is the eleventh sign of the zodiac, covering 300°–330° of the sidereal zodiac. Kumbha's symbol is a water pot, and tradition links it with sharing, fresh ideas and the common good. Its lord is Saturn, its element is air, its nature is fixed, and it is an odd (male) sign. It holds Dhanishtha 3,4, Shatabhisha 1,2,3,4 and Purva Bhadrapada 1,2,3 (nakshatra padas).

In North India, when someone says "my rashi is Kumbha", they mean the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in at birth. The first letter of a name, daily rashifal and kundli matching are all read from this Moon sign.

Note that sidereal Kumbha does not match the Western Aquarius dates; the FAQ below explains why.

Nature

As an air sign of fixed nature ruled by Saturn, Kumbha is seen by tradition as thoughtful, independent and concerned with people at large. People with the Moon here are thought to think outside the usual lines, value friendship highly, and take an interest in work that helps many people.

Still, this is only a tendency, not a verdict on any person. Two people with the same Moon sign can be very different, because the lagna, nakshatra, houses and dasha all shape the picture.

Strengths and things to keep in mind

Strengths: tradition associates this sign with original thinking, fairness, loyalty in friendship, and a wish to do something for society.

Things to keep in mind: Living in ideas can sometimes look like emotional distance, and one can hold to an opinion too firmly. Staying close emotionally to loved ones, and hearing others out, helps.

Both sides belong to the same temperament; neither is a flaw.

Work and interests

Tradition associates Kumbha with themes such as work that involves new ideas, technology, groups or social service: science and technology, research, social organisations, network and community work, and fields that give old methods a new shape. This does not fix one profession; for work, the 10th house, the dasha and the whole chart are read.

Relationships

Tradition sees Kumbha as a way of connecting that often begins in friendship. Equality, freedom and shared ideas are thought to matter here. Showing feelings openly too reassures a partner that they are more than a friend. The real picture of relationships comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the whole chart, not from the sign alone.

When Kumbha is the lagna

The lagna and the Moon sign are different things. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and place, while the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days.

When Kumbha is the lagna, Saturn becomes the lagna lord, and its placement matters for the whole chart. Tradition links a Kumbha lagna with an independent, inventive outlook that is concerned with people at large. Your Moon sign and lagna can be the same or different; each says its own thing.

Name syllables

In the avakahada chakra tradition, Kumbha has nine name syllables: गू, गे, गो, सा, सी, सू, से, सो, दा. Each belongs to one nakshatra pada:

  • Dhanishtha: pada 3: गू, pada 4: गे
  • Shatabhisha: pada 1: गो, pada 2: सा, pada 3: सी, pada 4: सू
  • Purva Bhadrapada: pada 1: से, pada 2: सो, pada 3: दा

At a naming, the syllable is chosen from the nakshatra pada of the Moon at birth. Use the name-letter calculator to find yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kumbha my Moon sign or my lagna? How do I tell?

The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at birth; the lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon. Both come from the date, exact time and place of birth. A free kundli lists them separately.

Why do Kumbha dates differ from Western Aquarius?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Today the two are about 24° apart (the ayanamsa). So the Sun is in sidereal Kumbha roughly from 13 February to 13 March, not on the Western Aquarius dates (20 January to 18 February).

What are the name syllables for Kumbha?

गू, गे, गो, सा, सी, सू, से, सो, दा. Which one is yours depends on the nakshatra pada of your birth Moon.

Why is Kumbha's varna listed as Shudra?

The avakahada chakra lists Kumbha as Shudra; varna here is an old astrological category, not caste. In ashtakoota kundli matching, varna and vashya are two small factors, and this grouping exists for them. Kumbha's vashya is Nara (human). It has nothing to do with a person's family or community.

Which planets are exalted, debilitated or in moolatrikona in Kumbha, and what does it mean?

Following BPHS, in Kumbha Saturn is in moolatrikona (0–20°). These are technical names for planetary dignity, and none of them decides good or bad on its own; the house a planet sits in, its company and the running dasha are all read together.
