Introduction

Vrishabha is the second sign of the zodiac, covering 30°–60° of the sidereal zodiac. Vrishabha's symbol is the bull, and tradition links it with steadiness, patience and an eye for beautiful things. Its lord is Venus, its element is earth, its nature is fixed, and it is an even (female) sign. It holds Krittika 2,3,4, Rohini 1,2,3,4 and Mrigashira 1,2 (nakshatra padas).

In North India, when someone says "my rashi is Vrishabha", they mean the Moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon was in at birth. The first letter of a name, daily rashifal and kundli matching are all read from this Moon sign.

Note that sidereal Vrishabha does not match the Western Taurus dates; the FAQ below explains why.

Nature

Being an earth sign of fixed nature ruled by Venus, Vrishabha is seen by tradition as calm, patient and practical. People with the Moon here are thought to move with care, change slowly, and stay with what they have chosen for a long time. Good food, music, a tidy home and comfort tend to settle them.

Still, this is only a tendency, not a verdict on any person. Two people with the same Moon sign can be very different, because the lagna, nakshatra, houses and dasha all shape the picture.

Strengths and things to keep in mind

Strengths: tradition associates this sign with patience, reliability, good sense with money and resources, and a feel for beauty and the arts.

Things to keep in mind: Steadiness can sometimes become stubbornness or a reluctance to change. Meeting new situations with an open mind, and keeping comfort habits in balance, helps.

Both sides belong to the same temperament; neither is a flaw.

Work and interests

Tradition associates Vrishabha with themes such as work that needs patience, a sense of beauty or care of resources: accounts and finance, farming and gardening, food, art, music, design, and fields where something lasting is built slowly. This does not fix one profession; for work, the 10th house, the dasha and the whole chart are read.

Relationships

Tradition sees Vrishabha as a loyal, warm way of connecting. Trust is thought to build slowly here, and once built it is kept wholeheartedly; affection is often shown through care and time spent together. Saying what one feels in good time keeps things easy. The real picture of relationships comes from the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the whole chart, not from the sign alone.

When Vrishabha is the lagna

The lagna and the Moon sign are different things. The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and place, while the Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days.

When Vrishabha is the lagna, Venus becomes the lagna lord, and its placement matters for the whole chart. Tradition links a Vrishabha lagna with a patient, practical outlook that values life's simple pleasures. Your Moon sign and lagna can be the same or different; each says its own thing.

Name syllables

In the avakahada chakra tradition, Vrishabha has nine name syllables: ई, उ, ए, ओ, वा, वी, वू, वे, वो. Each belongs to one nakshatra pada:

  • Krittika: pada 2: ई, pada 3: उ, pada 4: ए
  • Rohini: pada 1: ओ, pada 2: वा, pada 3: वी, pada 4: वू
  • Mrigashira: pada 1: वे, pada 2: वो

At a naming, the syllable is chosen from the nakshatra pada of the Moon at birth. Use the name-letter calculator to find yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vrishabha my Moon sign or my lagna? How do I tell?

The Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at birth; the lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon. Both come from the date, exact time and place of birth. A free kundli lists them separately.

Why do Vrishabha dates differ from Western Taurus?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac; Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. Today the two are about 24° apart (the ayanamsa). So the Sun is in sidereal Vrishabha roughly from 15 May to 14 June, not on the Western Taurus dates (20 April to 20 May).

What are the name syllables for Vrishabha?

ई, उ, ए, ओ, वा, वी, वू, वे, वो. Which one is yours depends on the nakshatra pada of your birth Moon.

Why is Vrishabha's varna listed as Vaishya?

The avakahada chakra lists Vrishabha as Vaishya; varna here is an old astrological category, not caste. In ashtakoota kundli matching, varna and vashya are two small factors, and this grouping exists for them. Vrishabha's vashya is Chatushpada (quadruped). It has nothing to do with a person's family or community.

Which planets are exalted, debilitated or in moolatrikona in Vrishabha, and what does it mean?

Following BPHS, in Vrishabha the Moon is exalted (deepest at 3°) and in moolatrikona (3–30°). These are technical names for planetary dignity, and none of them decides good or bad on its own; the house a planet sits in, its company and the running dasha are all read together. (Some texts start the Moon's moolatrikona at 4°; ePandit uses 3°.)
