Introduction
Shravana is the 22nd of the 27 nakshatras, spanning Capricorn 10°00′ – Capricorn 23°20′ (sidereal). In the Vimshottari dasha its lord is Chandra (Moon), whose mahadasha runs 10 years. Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi (Nakshatra-prakaraṇa 1) names its deity as Vishnu, and tradition gives it the symbol of an ear, or three footprints.
"Shravana" means hearing. In earlier times knowledge was learned by listening to a teacher, so tradition ties this nakshatra to learning and carrying a tradition forward. Its symbol is an ear, and some traditions also link it with the three footprints of Vishnu. All four padas fall in Makara.
Nature (as tradition sees it)
Tradition holds that people with the Moon in Shravana are good listeners: they hear before they speak and catch the heart of a matter. The Moon, its lord, adds sensitivity and a feel for other people's emotions, while Makara adds order, patience and hard work. Vishnu, the preserver, adds a sense of looking after and tending things.
Its gana is Deva. Tradition links this with a gentle, cooperative, sattvic temperament. It is simply an old classification.
These are traditional associations, not a verdict on any person. The lagna, the planets and the running dasha together make the picture; one nakshatra alone decides nothing.
Strengths and things to keep in mind
Strengths: listening closely, learning quickly, remembering well, connecting people and giving advice.
Things to keep in mind: tradition says those who listen a lot can sometimes take other people's words too much to heart. Not turning everything they hear into their own burden, and voicing their own view openly, keeps this nature balanced.
Work and interests
Tradition links this nakshatra with work that involves listening, teaching and keeping knowledge: teaching, counselling, languages and translation, music and audio, libraries and archives, or fields that preserve culture and tradition. These are directions of interest, not one fixed job.
Relationships
In relationships tradition sees these people as understanding and attentive. A partner feels heard, and that becomes the base of the bond. Stating their own needs as clearly as they listen to others keeps the relationship equal.
Faith
According to Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi, the deity of Shravana is Vishnu. Vishnu is seen as the preserver of the world, and the story of his three steps as Vamana is well known. So this nakshatra is tied to the ideas of care, patience and steady growth.
Name-mantra: ॐ विष्णवे नमः (nakshatra deity: Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi, Nakshatra-prakaraṇa 1; the name-mantra is traditional usage)
If you wish, give a child a storybook or a schoolbook, or sit with an elder and listen to them. (folk belief, optional)
Name syllables
In naming, tradition takes the first letter from the pada of the Moon's nakshatra. The four padas of Shravana give:
- Pada 1 (Makara): खी
- Pada 2 (Makara): खू
- Pada 3 (Makara): खे
- Pada 4 (Makara): खो
The pada depends on the exact birth time. Use the name-letter calculator to see yours.
