What is Kaal Sarp Dosha?

Explainer · reviewed August 2026

Kaal Sarp is a chart configuration where all seven classical planets lie enclosed between the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. While prominent in modern astrological discussions, classical texts emphasize balance through dasha lords and benefic planet placements.

How is the combination formed?

When the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn are situated on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, the alignment is noted. If any single planet moves beyond the nodal span, the configuration is modified or broken.

Common questions

Is Kaal Sarp a permanent curse?

No. Vedic astrology does not operate on permanent curses. Planetary influences unfold through time-bound dasha periods and specific transit interactions.

What happens if one planet is outside the Rahu-Ketu axis?

If even one planet is outside the axis, the configuration is considered broken (often referred to as an incomplete or partial alignment).
