What is Sade Sati?

Explainer · reviewed August 2026

Sade Sati is a 7.5-year planetary transit period occurring when Saturn moves through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses counted from the natal Moon sign. Classical texts treat it as a disciplined phase of restructuring and focus, not an unavoidable misfortune.

How is the transit period measured?

Saturn spends approximately 2.5 years in each zodiac sign. When Saturn enters the sign immediately preceding your Moon sign, Sade Sati begins. It continues through the Moon sign itself and concludes when Saturn exits the subsequent sign.

Because Saturn moves slowly, this cycle repeats roughly every 29.5 years in an individual’s life.

What mitigates its intensity?

When Saturn is a functional benefic for the chart (such as for Taurus and Libra ascendants), or when it transits its own signs or friendly houses, the classical tradition interprets the phase as constructive and stabilizing.

Common questions

Does Sade Sati always bring difficulties?

No. The effect of Saturn’s transit depends heavily on your rising sign, the running mahadasha, and Saturn’s natural relationship with the Moon in your chart.

How often does Sade Sati occur?

Because Saturn completes one orbit around the zodiac in about 29.5 years, Sade Sati occurs approximately two to three times in an average lifespan.
