Mangal dosha (kuja dosha) is a chart condition evaluated when Mars occupies certain houses counted from Lagna, Moon, or Venus. Exceptions and cancellation (parihara) rules apply. Traditions vary; we publish what we compute.

Textual origin and Parashari tradition
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra — the foundational text of the Parashari system computed by our engine — does not contain the Mangal Dosha doctrine. A full-text review of both volumes (Santhanam edition) reveals no Kuja-dosha rule, no 1/4/7/8/12 house set, and no parihāra list.
The historical textual roots in classical works like Jātaka Pārijāta (Adhyāya XVI) discuss malefic planetary placements in the 7th house generally, rather than Mars specifically. The modern codified doctrine is a later synthesis with distinct regional traditions.

Prevalence and statistical distribution
Method: 6,000 samples, 1960–2010, ten Indian cities, Lahiri sidereal, whole-sign houses, seed 20260822.
What this does not mean
Four out of five birth charts meet this condition. Counting Mars from three separate reference points — the ascendant, the Moon and Venus — catches about 79% of charts before a single exception is applied; after the traditional exceptions, roughly a quarter to a half remain, depending on which authority’s list you use.
The authorities who transmit the rule are the ones who warn about it. B. V. Raman opens his own account of it by calling it "one of the most misunderstood and misapplied astrological dicta."
It is not in the foundational text. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra — the root text of the Parashari system this app computes — does not contain Mangal Dosha. The doctrine is a later synthesis; the older material it grows from is about malefic planets in the 7th house generally, not Mars.
It is one factor among many, and the traditions disagree about it. Whether the 1st house counts or the 2nd depends on which region’s practice you follow, and every authority that names the condition also names the circumstances in which it does not apply.

Common questions
Does Mangal Dosha mean a marriage cannot take place?
No. Traditional authorities view it as one compatibility consideration among many. Multiple cancellation rules exist, and partner charts frequently balance the influence.
Can Mangal Dosha be cancelled completely?
Classical authorities describe multiple planetary configurations where the dosha is mitigated or remitted (parihara), including placements in specific signs, benefic conjunctions, and balanced partner placements.
