What is dhana yoga?

Dhana yogas are combinations that tradition links with earning and resources. ePandit mainly checks whether the 2nd and 11th lords are linked with the 5th and 9th lords. It is not a promise of any sum.

Introduction

Everyone wants to know what the chart says about money. The texts answer with "dhana yogas": combinations that tradition links with earning, saving and a sense for resources.

BPHS scatters its wealth rules across chapters, such as the chapter on the 2nd house (13) and the chapter on combinations for wealth (41). ePandit picks a few clear rules from these, shows them in a simple form, and says plainly that this grouping is our summary.

Which houses

  • The 2nd house: accumulated wealth, family, speech.
  • The 11th house: gains, income, fulfilment of wishes.
  • The 5th and 9th houses: BPHS calls them "Lakshmi sthanas". According to BPHS (41.16), the lords of the 5th and 9th are capable of bestowing wealth, and so are planets that join them.

ePandit's rule

ePandit checks two things:

1. A 2nd/11th lord linked with a 5th/9th lord. The lord of the 2nd or 11th connects with the lord of the 5th or 9th: in the same sign, in each other's signs (exchange), or by mutual full aspect. This grouping rests on BPHS 41.16 (the 5th and 9th lords as givers of wealth, and planets joining them). Raman also writes that great wealth is spoken of when the 2nd lord joins the 9th lord in the 9th.

2. A link between the 2nd and 11th lords. BPHS (13.4): the 2nd lord in the 11th and the 11th lord in the 2nd, or the two together in a kendra or trikona.

If one planet rules both kinds of house (for some lagnas the same planet rules the 2nd and the 9th), this is noted separately.

Lakshmi yoga

According to BPHS (36.27-28), when the lord of the 9th is in a kendra in its moolatrikona, own or exaltation sign, and the lagna lord is well placed, Lakshmi yoga forms. Phaladeepika (6.21) gives another form: the 9th lord and Venus in own or exaltation signs in a kendra or trikona.

ePandit reads "the lagna lord well placed" as: the lagna lord is not debilitated and not in the 6th, 8th or 12th. This is our reading, and the yoga says so.

How to read it

BPHS (41.17) itself says these yogas should be read only after weighing the favourable or unfavourable condition and strength of the planets. So:

  • A dhana yoga is one factor among many in the whole chart.
  • Tradition holds that it shows more in the dasha of the planets involved.
  • Effort, good sense and sound decisions always go along with it.
  • No yoga promises a sum of money, a lottery or riches.

An example

Take a Mesha lagna. The 2nd house (Vrishabha) is ruled by Venus, the 11th (Kumbha) by Saturn, the 5th (Simha) by the Sun and the 9th (Dhanu) by Jupiter.

If Venus and Jupiter sit in the same sign, the 2nd and 9th lords are linked, and ePandit shows it as a dhana yoga: "lord of the 2nd (Venus) and lord of the 9th (Jupiter) in the same sign". It also notes that Venus rules the 7th and Jupiter the 12th as well, because the full picture depends on that.

Frequently asked questions

My chart has no dhana yoga. Does that mean money will not come?

No. Dhana yogas are a few combinations among many; their absence is not a lack or a verdict. The whole chart, the dasha and effort are read together.

How is dhana yoga different from raja yoga?

Raja yoga comes from kendra and trikona lords; dhana yoga involves wealth houses such as the 2nd and 11th. Many charts have both.

Do I need a remedy for dhana yoga?

No. Yogas are shown for information. ePandit does not sell any remedy with a yoga.
