What the 5th house shows

The fifth sign from the Lagna is the 5th house. It has two traditional names: Putra bhava (children) and Vidya bhava (intelligence and learning). Jyotish associates it with:

  • children and the bond with them
  • intelligence, understanding and the way one learns
  • creativity: art, writing, sport and work done from the heart
  • romance and joy of mind
  • mantra, devotion and purva punya, the fruit of past good deeds as tradition sees it
  • the gift of advising and teaching others

Tradition holds that the 5th shows what a person creates with a full heart. It is a tendency, not a fixed fact; the full chart is read together.

Its place in tradition: group, karaka, dig bala

The 5th house is a panaphara (2, 5, 8, 11) and also a trikona (1, 5, 9). Tradition treats the trikonas as houses of dharma and grace, and calls the link between their lords and the kendra lords the basis of raja yoga. Among the four aims of life it is a dharma house.

Its natural karaka is Jupiter, which tradition links with children, knowledge and a teacher's grace. The fifth sign of the kalapurusha is Simha, ruled by the Sun, which tradition reads as the colour of creation and self-expression. It is not a kendra, so no planet gains full dig bala here.

Whole-sign house and bhava chalit

ePandit shows the 5th house in two ways. In whole-sign houses the 5th sign counted from the Lagna is the whole 5th house. In the bhava chalit the house boundaries are set from the exact degree of the ascendant, so a planet near the edge of a sign can appear in the neighbouring house.

Suppose the Lagna is at Kanya 24° and Jupiter at Makara 1°: in whole-sign houses Jupiter is in the 5th, but in the chalit it can fall within the 4th. Tradition then reads Jupiter in the matters of both the 5th and the 4th.

These are two views of the same sky, not a mistake. ePandit uses whole-sign houses (D1) as the base; when the two differ, tradition reads the themes of both houses together.

The 5th lord and planets here, read calmly

The ruler of the 5th is the panchamesha. Tradition holds that the house it occupies shows where the mind and creativity tend to go: with the 5th lord in the 10th, learning feeding into work; in the 9th, a love of higher study and of teachers.

Planets in the 5th are said to colour thought and creation: Mercury logic and numbers, Venus art and music, Jupiter scripture and counsel, the Sun a leader's way of thinking. An empty 5th house is not a lack; the 5th lord, Jupiter and the aspects are read instead. Everything is understood with the full chart and the dasha.

The 5th house in the navamsa, the saptamsha (D7) and D24

The Shodashavarga chapter of BPHS assigns the saptamsha (D7) to children and the next generation, and the chaturvimshamsha (D24) to learning. Tradition reads the 5th house and its lord in D1 first and confirms in these two vargas.

The 5th lord and Jupiter in the navamsa (D9) are read too. D24 is a fine division; a few minutes' difference in birth time can change it, so it is read with care.

Ashtakavarga: the numbers for this house

Ashtakavarga adds the bindu tables of seven planets into the Sarvashtakavarga (SAV); in every chart the twelve signs hold exactly 337 points, about 28 per sign on average. The 5th house's number is the SAV of the sign that falls in your 5th house; with a Vrishchika lagna, for example, that is Meena.

ePandit shows these figures unreduced. They are a count, not a verdict, and we do not call them good or bad. You can see the number in the Ashtakavarga tab of your free kundli.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 5th house decide matters of children?

No. Tradition links it with children, but no single house settles something so personal. Here a doctor's advice is the first support.

For studies, should I look at the 5th or the 4th?

Tradition reads early schooling from the 4th and intelligence and understanding from the 5th. For higher study the 9th is read as well.

What does purva punya mean?

Tradition holds that the 5th shows the grace that comes from past good deeds. It is a matter of faith; it does not make today's actions count for less.

Where can I see D7 and D24?

In the charts tab of the free kundli, pick D7 or D24 in the D-selector.
