What is the difference between lagna, Moon sign, and Sun sign?

Lagna (ascendant) is the zodiac constellation rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth, setting the chart’s 12 houses. Your Moon sign (Chandra rashi) is where the Moon was positioned in the sidereal sky — what Indian families usually mean by "your rashi." Your Sun sign marks the Sun’s position.
What your family calls "your rashi" is almost always your Chandra rashi (Moon sign), not your Sun sign. In contrast, Western astrology phone apps default to the tropical Sun sign.
How the three signs differ in practice
Lagna (ascendant) changes sign roughly every two hours as the Earth rotates, requiring an exact birth time and geographic location. It determines the 12 houses of your Vedic chart and forms the primary reference frame for personal timing and transit readings.
Chandra rashi (Moon sign) changes sign approximately every 2.25 days as the Moon orbits the Earth. It governs the natal nakshatra, mental disposition, and Vimshottari dasha calculations.
Surya rashi (Sun sign) changes sign once a month (~30 days). In the Vedic sidereal system (Lahiri), it sits ~24 degrees behind the Western tropical Sun sign due to the precession of the equinoxes (ayanamsa).

What this difference does not mean
Having different signs across systems is not a contradiction or an error. Western astrology measures from the moving vernal equinox (tropical), while Vedic astrology measures from fixed stellar constellations (sidereal Lahiri). Both calculate correct positions within their respective coordinate frames.
Neither your family's Moon sign nor your Western Sun sign is "wrong" — they are different astronomical measurements. Knowing which one a reading uses ensures you read the right section.

Common questions
Why does my Western sign say Gemini while my kundli says Taurus?
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, while Vedic astrology uses the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac. The sidereal zodiac subtracts the ayanamsa (~24° offset), shifting most dates ~23–24 days earlier into the preceding constellation.
Can I find my lagna without an exact birth time?
No. Because the ascendant moves through a new zodiac sign every ~2 hours, an accurate birth time and location are required. Without a birth time, we do not guess with a noon default.
