Introduction
Vidyarambh, also called akshararambh or akshar-abhyas, is the day a child writes letters for the first time. It is not the first day of school; it is a small, loving rite at home before that, in which the family blesses the child's path of learning.
First of all: your family's kul tradition comes first. Some hold it at a temple, some at home; in some families a grandparent guides the hand, in others a guru.
Which time
The Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi (Saṁskāra-prakaraṇa, verse 37) gives the 5th year and uttarāyaṇa for vidyarambh. Uttarayana is the Sun's northward course, from Makara sankranti to Karka sankranti, roughly mid-January to mid-July.
Two days are especially loved in tradition:
- Vasant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami): the day of Mother Saraswati. In North and East India many families have the child write a first letter on this day.
- Vijayadashami (Ashwin Shukla Dashami): in South India, especially Kerala and Andhra-Telangana, there is a long-loved tradition of vidyarambh on this day.
Vasant Panchami falls in uttarayana. Vijayadashami does not, but it has its own old tradition, and families in their lakhs hold the rite lovingly on both days. Follow your home's custom.
The rite of akshar-abhyas
The rite is very simple:
- Remember Ganesha: ॐ गं गणपतये नमः, and bow to Mother Saraswati.
- Spread rice or clean sand on a plate.
- An elder, or a guru, holds the child's finger and writes the first letter in it. In many homes it is "ॐ" or "श्री", in others "अ", the first letter of the alphabet.
- Then a letter or two on a slate or in a notebook, and a small puja of books and pens.
- Sweets for the child, and blessings from everyone.
Whatever wobbly shape the child makes is beautiful.
With joy, without pressure
The real meaning of vidyarambh: let the child's first bond with learning be one of love.
- Don't insist the child writes "correctly". Holding the finger is enough.
- If the child is tired, hungry or sleepy, change the time. The muhurta matters less than the child's mood.
- Keep it short; five or ten minutes of ritual is plenty for a small child.
- Don't compare: "Their child can already write a full name." Every child learns at their own pace.
It is enough if the day becomes a sweet memory for the child.
सुरक्षा पहले (Safety first)
- Doctor first: for the baby's health, feeding or any discomfort, the doctor is the first help. A muhurta can always move to fit the doctor's advice.
- Nothing in the baby's mouth: don't put anything in the baby's mouth that the doctor hasn't approved. No honey at all before the first birthday; keep ghutti, coins and rings away from the mouth.
- No tight thread on the neck: never tie a black thread or cord tightly around the neck. If you wish, a loose thread on the wrist, with an adult watching.
- Sterile tools for ear-piercing: if karnavedh is done, only sterile tools and trained hands.
- No gems on babies: no gems, stones or heavy jewellery on small children.
- Small things: rice, chalk or pencil tips should not go into the child's mouth; keep the rite under adult watch.
