What Vasant Panchami is
Magha's Shukla Panchami is Vasant Panchami or ‘Shri Panchami’. Yellow mustard fields, mango blossom and soft sunshine: it is the turn from winter to spring. Dharmasindhu says the spring festival begins on this day.
Today it is best known for Saraswati puja, the Goddess of learning, music and art. Schools and colleges hold puja, and many families do a child's first letters (akshararambha) today.
How the date is decided
Shastra (Dharmasindhu): for Vasant Panchami the Panchami is checked in the forenoon (purvahna). If the Panchami is in the forenoon of the second day only, the second day; otherwise the first.
So if the Panchami is in the first day's forenoon, or on both days, the first day is taken. Our calendar shows the day by this rule. We don't compute a puja muhurta; tradition likes the morning.
Worship in the text and in tradition
The text (Dharmasindhu): the day gives worship of Rati and Kama and the spring festival; Nirnaya Sindhu likewise gives Rati–Kama worship and the spring festival on Magha Shukla Panchami. In the old texts it is a festival of love, beauty and the joy of the season.
Tradition: in east and north India the day became Saraswati puja. We did not find Saraswati puja on this day in our library's texts, so we write it as tradition. Both are true together: a celebration of the season, and respect for learning.
Story (tradition): a folk story says that at creation's start all was silent; at Brahma's prayer Saraswati appeared with her veena, and the world received speech and music. We keep this as a traditional story.
How families celebrate
Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Bihar: Saraswati images at home and in schools; children place their books before her and don't study that day; ‘hate-khori’ (first letters). Punjab: yellow turbans and dupattas, and kites. Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh: yellow clothes, saffron sweet rice, and in places the first step towards Holi (planting the Holika pole). Rajasthan: garlands of yellow flowers. Musicians and artists worship their instruments and tools.
A simple puja
- Morning bath, yellow or clean light clothes.
- A picture of Saraswati at the shrine, with books, pens and instruments nearby.
- Yellow flowers, rice, sandal, and ‘Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah’ or a Saraswati hymn.
- Saffron sweet rice or boondi as offering.
- First letters: have a small child write ‘Om’ or their name in rice on a plate or on a slate (by your tradition).
No paid puja is needed.
Safety
The season is turning: mornings and evenings are cold, so keep children warm. If flying kites, use plain cotton thread, not glass-coated manjha, and stay away from roof edges. Immerse images at home or in an artificial tank; at a river, stay out of deep water.
In ePandit
In ePandit: our calendar shows the festival day with your city's sunrise and sunset. The day is decided once, for Ujjain; your city's times are shown separately. We don't compute muhurta yet, and we never call a festival good or bad for anyone.
