Introduction
Uttara Bhadrapada is the 26th of the 27 nakshatras, spanning Pisces 3°20′ – Pisces 16°40′ (sidereal). In the Vimshottari dasha its lord is Shani (Saturn), whose mahadasha runs 19 years. Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi (Nakshatra-prakaraṇa 1) names its deity as Ahirbudhnya, and tradition gives it the symbol of the back legs of a cot, or twins.
"Uttara" means the latter. It is the partner of Purva Bhadrapada, and together they form the image of a cot, with Uttara Bhadrapada as the back legs. Its other symbol is twins. All four padas fall in Meena.
Nature (as tradition sees it)
Tradition holds that people with the Moon in Uttara Bhadrapada are calm, deep and restrained. Where Purva Bhadrapada is seen as the fire of dedication, this is the settled depth that follows it. Saturn, its lord, adds patience, discipline and responsibility, and Meena adds compassion, imagination and spirituality.
Its gana is Manushya (human). Tradition links this with a practical, balanced temperament that works in the middle of the world.
These are traditional associations, not a verdict on any person. The lagna, the planets and the running dasha together make the picture; one nakshatra alone decides nothing.
Strengths and things to keep in mind
Strengths: patience, restraint, staying calm in hard times, understanding others' pain, deep insight and good advice.
Things to keep in mind: tradition says deep, quiet people can sometimes keep their feelings inside. Speaking their mind, and now and then putting work down to relax, is good for this nature.
Work and interests
Tradition links this nakshatra with work that involves patience, depth and service: counselling and guidance, spirituality and meditation, research and writing, social service and charities, or work where one thing has to be looked after calmly over a long time. These are directions of interest, not one fixed job.
Relationships
In relationships tradition sees these people as steady, reliable and caring. They make promises thoughtfully and then keep them. Letting a partner into their inner world a little, and saying thanks and love in words too, keeps the bond warm.
Faith
According to Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi, the deity of Uttara Bhadrapada is Ahirbudhnya, "the serpent of the deep". Vedic tradition pairs him with Aja Ekapada and links him with the deep waters and knowledge hidden in the depths. So this nakshatra is tied to the ideas of stability and inner depth.
Name-mantra: ॐ अहिर्बुध्न्याय नमः (nakshatra deity: Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi, Nakshatra-prakaraṇa 1; the name-mantra is traditional usage)
If you wish, give fodder or a little seva at a gaushala or animal shelter. (folk belief, optional)
Name syllables
In naming, tradition takes the first letter from the pada of the Moon's nakshatra. The four padas of Uttara Bhadrapada give:
- Pada 1 (Meena): दू
- Pada 2 (Meena): थ
- Pada 3 (Meena): झ
- Pada 4 (Meena): ञ
The pada depends on the exact birth time. Use the name-letter calculator to see yours.
