Introduction
In kundli matching, many families are alarmed to hear "there is nadi dosha". That is understandable: in ashtakoot, nadi carries the most points (8 of 36), and Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi calls it the chief of the eight kootas.
But the same text also states its cancellations (parihār) clearly: the situations in which the dosha is not counted. This page sets out both calmly: what nadi is, when the dosha is counted, and when it is not.
The three nadis
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis. Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi (Vivāha-prakaraṇa, verse 34) gives the division:
| Nadi | The nine nakshatras |
|---|---|
| Aadi | Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Madhya | Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishtha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Antya | Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati |
If the bride's and groom's birth nakshatras fall in the same nadi, this koota scores 0, and tradition calls it nadi dosha. Different nadis score the full 8. The check uses only the birth nakshatras, so it usually works even with an uncertain birth time, unless the Moon was at a nakshatra boundary.
Cancellations: when the dosha is not counted
Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi (Vivāha-prakaraṇa, verse 36) gives three situations in which a shared nadi is not counted as a dosha:
| Cancellation | The text's own example |
|---|---|
| Same sign, different nakshatras | Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada (first three padas): both in Kumbha, different nakshatras |
| Same nakshatra, different signs | Purva Bhadrapada's first three padas (Kumbha) and its fourth pada (Meena) |
| Same nakshatra, different padas | Bharani's first pada and second pada |
The verse adds that gana dosha is not counted in these situations either, and its Hindi commentary adds tara dosha. Some traditions accept further cancellations; ePandit's status is decided by the ones above.
How ePandit shows it
A cancellation removes the dosha; it never adds points. So ePandit shows nadi's actual score (0 or 8) and notes beside it whether a cancellation applies, and which.
In the match summary ePandit looks at the doshas first and the total second (our own convention, set out on the ashtakoot milan page). If a nadi dosha has no cancellation, the summary is "बात करके आगे बढ़िए" (talk it over, then go ahead). That does not mean "no"; it means both families and both partners should talk openly. ePandit never tells anyone not to marry.
What it does not mean
- Nadi comes from the Moon's nakshatra. It is not a prediction about two people's nature, health or future.
- Many fearful things are said about nadi dosha in folk talk. ePandit does not repeat them.
- Points alone never decide a marriage. The whole chart, both people's natures and their understanding of each other matter far more.
- It calls for no puja, gem or expense. If a family wishes to do something of its own accord, /upay shows the ₹0 options first.
