What Bhai Dooj is
Bhai Dooj is the last of Diwali's five days: Kartika Shukla Dvitiya, the day after Govardhan puja. Its name in the texts is Yama Dvitiya. The brother visits his sister's home; she applies a tilak, does aarti and serves him a meal with love; he gives a gift.
It differs from Raksha Bandhan: there the sister brings the rakhi to her brother; on Bhai Dooj the brother comes to his sister's home for a meal.
How the date is decided
Shastra (Dharmasindhu): if the Dvitiya covers the aparahna (divide the day into five parts; the fourth, i.e. the afternoon) on the first day only, it is the first day; if on both days, or on neither, the second day.
In 2026 the Dvitiya runs from 2:00 pm on 10 November to 3:53 pm on 11 November. The afternoon of the 10th (about 1:17–3:30) is only half covered, the 11th fully. By the rule, Bhai Dooj is Wednesday, 11 November.
The story: tradition / Purana story
Dharmasindhu quotes a line: Yamuna once fed Yama herself at her own home, so this Dvitiya is called ‘Yama Dvitiya’ in the world. Tradition fills in the rest: Yama and Yamuna, children of the Sun, were brother and sister; she kept inviting him, and one day he came. She applied a tilak and fed him, and Yama, pleased, granted that a brother who eats at his sister's home with respect on this day would have a happy home.
So in many places brothers and sisters bathe in the Yamuna today, especially at Vishram Ghat in Mathura.
How families celebrate
- North India: Bhai Dooj; the sister applies roli and rice, and gives a dried coconut or sweets. Many homes draw a square in the courtyard and hear the story.
- Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka: Bhau-beej; the sister does aarti for her brother.
- Bengal: Bhai Phonta; a mark of sandal and kajal.
- Nepal: Bhai Tika, the last day of Tihar, with a seven-coloured tika.
Dharmasindhu says that one without a sister should honour the sisters of friends. The day is about honouring bonds, not only those of blood.
A simple rite
- The sister prepares a plate: roli, rice, a lamp, a sweet, and a coconut if she likes.
- The brother sits; tilak, then aarti.
- Each prays for the other's wellbeing.
- She serves a meal; he gives a gift as he can.
Dharmasindhu also gives a Yamuna bath and remembrance of Yama and Chitragupta in the afternoon; many families do Chitragupta puja today.
Safety
After Diwali the roads are crowded and people are tired; rest before a long drive. If bathing in a river, stay near the bank, away from deep water and currents, and hold children's hands. If the sister lives far away, families keep the gesture by phone or video and meet later.
